Landfill Gas (LFG) Power Generation

IYO ALAM SEKITAR, BERCHAM LFS

Ipoh, Malaysia

August 2014 – 2015

Organics delivered a turnkey landfill gas power generation project for the IYO Alam Sekitar at the Bercham Landfill Site (LFS) in Ipoh, Malaysia.

Landfill gas contains methane, which is a highly potent greenhouse gas. This project was designed to control this critical environmental problem and convert the Landfill Gas (LFG) into a valuable, carbon-neutral resource. The system utilizes 2 x 500 kW spark ignition engines to safely remove LFG from the environment and convert it into much-needed electricity.

Project OVERVIEW

This 1 MWe LFG power generation project ensures that over 1,000 Nm3/hour of landfill gas is processed. The facility handles the gas, generates power, and displaces the use of fossil fuels for electricity generation in the region.

The project was executed as a turnkey solution, covering the design, fabrication, project management, installation, and commissioning of the entire system.

Project Specification

  • Waste Type: Landfill Gas (LFG)

  • Project Type: Turnkey Landfill Gas Power Plant

  • Biogas Potential (LFG flow): Over 1,000 Nm3/hour (~24,000 Nm3/day)

  • Total Power Capacity Installed: 1 MWe

  • Annual Electricity Potential: 7,000 MWh / year

  • Project Budget: USD 2 million

  • System Detail: 2 x 500 kW spark ignition engines

PROJECT Impact

  • Greenhouse Gas Emission Prevention: Captures LFG, preventing the release of high-GWP methane into the atmosphere, with an estimated capture of ~12,000 Nm3 of methane per day.

  • Carbon Equivalent Mitigation: Converts the captured methane into clean energy, achieving an estimated emission reduction of ~241 tonnes of CO2e per day.

  • Renewable Energy Generation: Generates 1 MWe of total installed power capacity, providing a stable, carbon-neutral electricity source.

  • Resource Conversion: Converts a major environmental liability into a resource, displacing the use of fossil fuels.

*Note (assumptions):

  • Methane Fraction: Methane content in the Landfill Gas (LFG) is assumed to be ~50%, which is typical for LFG projects.

  • GHG Reduction: Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction is calculated using the GWP100 for methane = 28 tCO2e per tonne of CH4.

  • Power Capacity: The electrical output of 1 MWe is based on the total power capacity installed.
