Organics delivered a turnkey landfill gas power generation project for the MMPC Montalban Landfill Site near Manila.

Landfill gas is a highly potent greenhouse gas, with methane being a major component. Its control is environmentally critical, but its energy potential allows it to be converted into a valuable carbon-neutral resource. This project ensures that a massive volume of LFG is safely removed from the environment and converted into dispatchable electricity.

Project OVERVIEW

This is a large-scale LFG project with 9 MWe of installed power capacity. The system involves the design, fabrication, and installation of a complete gas collection and power generation system. By using spark-ignition engines, the project ensures the LFG is removed from the environment and converted into electricity, displacing the need for fossil fuel power generation.

The project manages an enormous flow of landfill gas, generating power that can be used on-site or exported to the national grid.

PROJECT Impact

  • Greenhouse Gas Emission Prevention: Captures massive volumes of LFG, preventing the release of high-GWP methane into the atmosphere, with an estimated capture of ~90,000 Nm3 of methane per day.

  • Carbon Equivalent Mitigation: Converts the captured methane into clean energy, achieving an estimated emission reduction of ~1,806 tonnes of CO2e per day.

  • Renewable Energy Generation: Generates 9 MWe of total installed power capacity, creating a stable, carbon-neutral electricity source for the region.

  • Resource Conversion: Converts a major environmental problem into a valuable resource, displacing the use of fossil fuels.

  • Compliance: Ensures controlled disposal and utilization of LFG, meeting environmental regulations.

*Note (assumptions):

  • Methane Fraction: Methane content in the Landfill Gas (LFG) is assumed to be ~50%, which is typical for LFG projects.

  • GHG Reduction: Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction is calculated using the GWP100 for methane = 28 tCO2e per tonne of CH4.

  • Power Capacity: The electrical output of 9 MWe is based on the total power capacity installed.
