UK Embassy Event Highlights Biogas & Circular Economy Innovation

 

From 10 to 13 November 2025, PT Organics Bali had the honour of joining the UK Clean Energy Trade Mission to Indonesia, an event organised by the British Embassy and the UK Department for Business & Trade. The mission brought together leading UK clean-energy companies and key Indonesian stakeholders to explore collaborations in renewable energy, circular economy, and sustainable agriculture. For Organics Bali, the programme provided an important platform to deepen discussions on biogas, biodigester technologies, and waste-to-energy solutions—areas where Indonesia is experiencing rapid growth and rising demand.

Indonesia’s Renewable-Energy Priorities Are Becoming Clearer

Across meetings with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Investment, PLN, Pertamina NRE, PLN Indonesia Power, Barito Renewables, Adaro Power, and Medco Power, a common message stood out: Indonesia’s long-term energy direction is becoming more defined.

Government officials highlighted a strategic national focus on:

  • Geothermal energy
  • Solar/PV deployment
  • Energy storage to stabilise intermittent renewable power

However, in parallel with these national priorities, many institutions showed strong interest in practical and commercially scalable technologies—especially biogas plant systems, anaerobic digester solutions, and circular business models that turn agricultural and industrial waste into energy.

This is where biogas energi and biomethane upgrading fit naturally into Indonesia’s decarbonisation pathway.

High Interest in Waste-to-Energy and Biomethane

Although geothermal and solar dominate Indonesia’s strategic narrative, the discussions revealed a rising demand for technologies that can be deployed quickly, affordably, and close to the source of waste.

Several industry leaders expressed interest in:

  • Biodigester systems for agriculture waste and livestock manure
  • Biogas from organic waste from food industries and municipalities
  • Palm oil mill effluent (POME) treatment and POME kelapa sawit biogas recovery
  • Biogas to electricity using biogas generator 
  • Upgrading biogas into biomethane or BioCNG (bio CNG is renewable gas)
  • Biogas power plant (PLT biogas / pembangkit listrik biogas) for industrial clusters

This growing interest aligns strongly with Organics Bali’s expertise in designing digester biogas, anaerobic digester, and circular economy and sustainability solutions that turn agricultural waste into clean, usable energy.

POME Biogas and Circular Economy Opportunities

Palm oil companies remain one of the strongest potential partners for biogas deployment. With Indonesia producing millions of tonnes of palm oil mill effluent (POME sawit) each year, the potential for biogas energi is enormous.

Stakeholders acknowledged that:

  • POME-based biodigester systems can significantly reduce methane emissions.
  • Captured methane can fuel biogas generators, produce biomethane, or be converted into BioCNG.
  • Biogas upgrading creates new revenue streams and supports sustainable agriculture and ekonomi sirkuler development.

This aligns directly with Indonesia’s climate ambitions, especially reducing emissions from agriculture and land use.

Growing Conversations Around SMRs and Long-Term Energy Planning

Another emerging trend from the mission was the increasing interest in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). While nuclear energy is gaining political traction, most stakeholders view SMRs as a post-2035 option rather than an immediate clean-energy solution.
In contrast, biogas, biodigester, and waste-to-energy systems are already deployable, making them attractive for companies seeking results within the next 2–5 years.

Strengthening UK–Indonesia Collaboration

The mission facilitated direct conversations with UK technology providers in areas such as:

  • Gas handling and upgrading
  • Cryogenic liquefaction for BioLNG
  • Carbon accounting and LCA
  • Industrial decarbonisation
  • These technologies complement Organics Bali’s capabilities in:
  • Anaerobic digestion
  • Biogas plant engineering
  • Circular economy solutions
  • Biogas upgrading into biomethane and BioCNG

The result is a stronger shared vision for implementing circular economy and sustainability solutions across Indonesia’s industrial and agricultural sectors.

Practical, Scalable Solutions Remain the Priority

One of the strongest messages from the mission is that Indonesia is seeking solutions that can be implemented now.
This includes:

  • Cost-effective biogas digester systems
  • Biogas power plant installations with transparent harga biogas and operating costs
  • Modular systems for plantations and rural industries
  • Technologies capable of turning kotoran hewan, food waste, and POME into energy

These are areas where Organics Bali continues to provide leadership.

Overall, the UK Clean Energy Trade Mission was productive and insightful. It strengthened institutional relationships, opened new partnership opportunities, and confirmed that biogas, biomethane, BioCNG, and circular economy models are increasingly central to Indonesia’s renewable-energy landscape.

As Indonesia accelerates its clean-energy transition, solutions such as biodigesters, anaerobic digesters, and biogas menjadi listrik will play a vital role—providing scalable, practical pathways to reduce emissions, support sustainable agriculture, and build a more resilient ekonomi sirkuler for the future.
