PT Organicsindo Konstruksi Energi (Organics Bali) has completed the development of a POME-to-Power biogas system for Gunung Makmur Mill, a 75-ton FFB per hour palm oil mill. The project converts palm oil mill effluent into renewable energy while significantly reducing methane emissions through a covered lagoon and a fully integrated biogas processing system.

This facility is equipped with an enclosed flare, ensuring high combustion efficiency and making the project eligible for carbon credit registration under voluntary carbon market schemes.

Project OVERVIEW

The Methane Capture and Biogas Co-Firing project is designed to process 750 m³/day of POME, achieving high organic load reduction and stable methane production. The system uses geomembrane-lined covered lagoons combined with a complete gas treatment train—drying, H₂S removal, compression, and safety systems—to deliver biogas suitable for co-firing and controlled combustion.

Project Specification

  • Mill capacity: 75 TPH Fresh Fruit Bunch
  • POME flowrate: 750 m³/day
  • COD load: 60 tonnes/day
  • COD removal efficiency: ~80% (≈ 48 tonnes/day removed)
  • Biogas production: 30,558 Nm³/day
  • Methane captured: 16,807 Nm³/day
  • Thermal energy: 6.96 MW
  • Electrical potential: 2.58 MWe
  • Biogas application: Co-firing & biomass support
  • Flare type: Enclosed flare, destruction efficiency >99% and eligible for carbon credit registration (methane destruction is MRV-compliant)

PROJECT Impact

  • Converts palm oil mill wastewater (POME) into renewable biogas energy

  • Removes approximately 48 tonnes of COD per day, improving wastewater quality

  • Captures 16,807 Nm³ of methane per day, preventing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions

  • Achieves ~327 tCO₂e/day avoided, contributing substantial climate benefits

  • Supports mill operations with renewable energy for boiler co-firing

  • Reduces odor, lagoon emissions, and environmental footprint

  • Enables potential carbon credit revenue through enclosed flare methane destruction

*Note (assumptions):

  • Methane fraction in biogas assumed based on project data: 16,807 Nm³ CH₄/day out of 30,558 Nm³/day biogas.
  • GHG reduction calculated using GWP100 for methane = 28 tCO₂e per tonne CH₄.
  • Methane density used for conversion: 0.7168 kg/Nm³.
  • Electrical potential (2.58 MWe) based on standard genset efficiency for biogas systems.
  • COD removal efficiency derived from project specification (≈80%).
  • Enclosed flare destruction efficiency assumed at >99%, meeting voluntary carbon market MRV requirements.
  • Actual carbon credit issuance is dependent on verification methodology, monitoring data, and registry approval.

Collaboration and continuous improvement became key strengths in the development of the Methane Capture Plant (MCP) – Biogas Co-Firing Project, delivering highly positive and satisfying results. This was demonstrated through Organics’ professionalism, working in synergy with BGA with consistent accountability and attention to detail throughout the planning stages up to full implementation.

We truly appreciate Organics’ commitment to ensuring the project was completed on time with optimal quality, exceeding our initial expectations.
