Ammonia Wastewater Treatment Indonesia

High ammonia can create a difficult wastewater treatment problem. It can affect discharge compliance, place additional load on biological treatment, and interfere with anaerobic digestion and biogas performance.

Organics provides ammonia removal and recovery solutions for industrial, municipal and high-strength wastewater applications, with OTAR® as the primary ammonia treatment platform.

C

Palm Oil Mills & POME

Palm oil mill effluent can contain ammonia alongside high organic loads. Ammonia treatment may be required as part of the wider wastewater treatment and discharge strategy.

Livestock & Poultry

Manure and washdown wastewater can carry concentrated ammoniacal nitrogen. Large-scale farming operations can therefore generate a significant ammonia treatment load.

Anaerobic Digestion & Biogas

Digestate, centrate and other digester side-streams can return concentrated ammonia to the wastewater treatment process. High ammonia can also affect anaerobic digestion performance.

Food & Beverage Processing

Protein- and nitrogen-rich process streams can generate ammonia-bearing wastewater. Relevant applications include dairy, meat, fisheries, soy, MSG, tapioca and sugar processing.

Landfill Leachate & Waste Processing

Landfill leachate and waste-processing side-streams can contain high ammonia concentrations and place additional load on biological treatment.

Municipal, Hospitality & Industrial Wastewater

Municipal facilities, hotels, developments and industrial plants may need ammonia treatment to meet applicable discharge requirements.

Where Does High-Ammonia Wastewater Come From?

Why High Ammonia Becomes a Treatment Problem

Discharge Compliance

A facility can meet other wastewater parameters and still have difficulty meeting its ammonia requirement.

Biological Treatment

High ammonia can increase biological loading and can inhibit nitrification when concentrations exceed the process design range.

Anaerobic Digestion

High ammonia can inhibit anaerobic digestion and affect digester stability and biogas performance.

Ammonia-Rich Side-Streams

Centrate and dewatering liquor can contain a disproportionate share of the total ammonia load and return it to the head of the works.

Nitrogen Recovery

Ammonia does not always need to be treated only as a waste stream. Depending on the application, it can potentially be recovered as a useful nitrogen product.

Ammonia Treatment Solutions

Organics can also provide Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) systems where ammonia concentrations and biological loading are within the appropriate process range.

SBR is a separate wastewater treatment option, not an OTAR® variant. It can be used as the primary biological treatment process in suitable applications or as a polishing stage downstream of ammonia treatment.

For high-strength ammonia streams, OTAR® can reduce the ammonia load before biological treatment. The two approaches can therefore be complementary where the site requires both dedicated ammonia removal and biological polishing.

Indonesia Ammonia Wastewater Compliance

Ammonia discharge requirements in Indonesia depend on the wastewater source, sector, receiving environment and applicable environmental approvals. The regulatory framework can include national, domestic, sector-specific and provincial requirements.

Regulatory FrameworkMain ApplicationRelevance to Ammonia
PP No. 22/2021National environmental frameworkProvides the overarching environmental protection and receiving-water framework.
Permen LHK P.68/2016Domestic wastewaterIncludes domestic wastewater quality requirements, including ammonia.
Permen LH No. 5/2014 jo. P.21/2018Sector-specific industrial wastewaterProvides sector-specific effluent requirements for relevant industries.
Pergub Bali No. 16/2016Bali domestic wastewaterIncludes an ammonia limit of 10 mg/L for the applicable domestic discharge category.

Important: The applicable requirement must be confirmed against the facility’s environmental permit, technical approval and specific wastewater category.

Ammonia Treatment Track Record

Organics has more than two decades of thermal ammonia treatment experience, with 16+ facilities built since 1998 and more than 100,000 hours of documented compliant operation. The international reference installations below demonstrate treatment of high-strength ammonia wastewater and landfill leachate.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We answer the most common questions about ammonia recovery

Find answers to the most common questions about OTAR® technology, ammonia recovery, and its industrial applications.

What is ammonia wastewater treatment?

Ammonia wastewater treatment removes ammoniacal nitrogen from wastewater to meet treatment objectives, protect downstream biological processes or enable nitrogen recovery.

Which industries in Indonesia generate high-ammonia wastewater?

Applications include palm oil mills, livestock and poultry, food and beverage processing, anaerobic digestion, landfill leachate, municipal wastewater and other nitrogen-rich industrial processes.

What is the ammonia discharge standard in Indonesia?

The applicable ammonia requirement depends on the wastewater category, industry, receiving environment and environmental approvals. Relevant frameworks include PP No. 22/2021, Permen LHK P.68/2016, sector-specific industrial standards and applicable provincial requirements.

How do you remove ammonia from POME?

Ammonia treatment for POME is site-specific. The appropriate approach depends on POME flow, ammonia concentration, existing treatment, discharge target and available energy. OTAR® is Organics’ primary ammonia treatment platform.

Can ammonia removed from wastewater be recovered?

Depending on the selected treatment configuration and project requirements, ammonia can be recovered as ammonium hydroxide, ammonium sulphate or concentrated ammonia.

Can OTAR® and SBR be used together?

Yes. OTAR® can reduce a concentrated ammonia load before biological polishing, while SBR can provide downstream biological treatment where appropriate.

How can I assess an ammonia treatment project?

Initial assessment normally requires wastewater flow, influent ammonia concentration, required effluent target, wastewater source, existing treatment and available heat or energy.
